A superyacht’s published weekly rate is not the price of the journey. It is admission to a moving private house run by a professional crew. Fuel, provisions, berths, tax and gratuity enter afterwards. To understand the total, read not only the yacht but the week you intend to live aboard it.
Luxury is measured in friction removed
A superyacht earns its value when ten different wishes do not become ten logistical problems. Galley, deck, interior and bridge work at once while itinerary and tempo evolve. Square metres are visible; the deeper service is breakfast, tender, laundry, safety and a changed dinner plan happening without constant negotiation.
From charter rate to real cost
The published rate commonly pays for use of the yacht and its agreed crew during the contracted period. Only the agreement establishes the exact inclusion. Variable operating expenses, tax, delivery, communications, gratuity and exceptional services may sit outside it. Comparing rates without identical dates, region, contract basis and inclusions tells very little.
Separate charter rate, tax, variable expenditure, delivery/redelivery, optional services, gratuity and contingency. Travel to the yacht, hotels, baggage arrangements and personal insurance may follow. This complete ledger reveals both pre-departure cash flow and likely final cost. One percentage is easier to quote but almost always too blunt.
APA is an advance, not a fixed surcharge
The Advanced Provisioning Allowance funds variable expenses defined by the charter arrangement. The captain or responsible onboard authority accounts for it. Unspent funds are returned after reconciliation; if expenditure exceeds the advance, the charterer provides more. Mechanism, due date, currency, account and evidence belong to the signed contract.
Established charter houses often publish an APA range of this order, depending on yacht, destination and programme. It is neither law nor a promise of final consumption. A fast motor yacht covering long distances with large tenders behaves differently from a sailing yacht remaining in sheltered bays. The specific contractual request governs.
With a purely illustrative weekly rate of €250,000 and 30 per cent APA, €325,000 is due before tax and other items. If supported expenditure is €68,000, €7,000 remains; at €86,000, a further €11,000 is required. The arithmetic explains the mechanism, not a market quote.
Fuel is the largest moving variable
Hull, engines, speed, sea state, distance, generators, tenders and water toys alter consumption. Do not seek false precision for an itinerary that weather and captain may still change. Ask instead for assumptions under three programmes: quiet regional cruising, a balanced week and a distance-led route. Every assumption needs a bunker price and date.
Higher speed can increase consumption disproportionately, reduce comfort and still fail to secure a berth. A slow passage over breakfast or after dinner may be more valuable than racing to another famous name. Brief the desired experiences and maximum passage time, not an itinerary that works only at high speed.
Air-conditioning, galley, laundry and hotel operation continue at anchor. Chase boats, large tenders, personal watercraft and powered boards need fuel, maintenance and sometimes local authorisation. “Toys included” does not mean free or always available. Crew, weather, licence, area, noise and safety determine actual use.
Berths, provisioning, tax and delivery
A city berth during a major event follows a different economy from a night at anchor. Length, beam, draught, power, water, agent, waste and tender access affect cost and suitability. A requested reservation becomes dependable only when marina and captain confirm it for the specific yacht, date and conditions.
A marina gives land access and services, but also neighbours, noise and visibility. A buoy may provide protection and managed access if its load rating suits the yacht. Anchorage creates distance while remaining subject to holding, wind, swell, protected waters and the captain. The cheapest position is not necessarily the best stay.
The chef plans around the preference sheet, guests, route, storage and supply. Local fish, seasonal produce and intelligent purchasing may be more persuasive than imported trophy ingredients. Allergies require medical precision. Brands, vintages, specialist diets, children’s meals and restaurants ashore belong in the budget and logistics early.
One rare bottle may cost more than a full day of ordinary provisioning. Define style, budget, necessary icons and acceptable alternatives. Confirm availability, vintage, tax and transport. “Only the best” creates expenditure without curatorial value; a concise sommelier brief produces both pleasure and control.
VAT or equivalent treatment is not globally uniform and may change with country, embarkation, commercial status and actual programme. Historic online rates are not advice. Before signature, the responsible charter party should provide a written, yacht- and date-specific treatment, reviewed where appropriate by qualified tax or legal counsel.
If the yacht is outside the chosen cruising ground, positioning, crew time, fuel, ports and an empty passage may be charged. Clarify delivery and redelivery before comparing. A yacht with a higher rate already in the region can cost less in full and support a more reliable programme.
Insurance, liability and gratuity sit outside APA
Damage, loss, smoking, pets or exceptional use may receive separate treatment under the agreement. Read security deposit, liability limits, exclusions and the damage procedure. APA is not a substitute for security. Do not invent an informal handover; follow the yacht’s official inventory and crew reporting process.
The yacht has its own insurance requirements, while the charterer still needs personal protection for cancellation, medical events, evacuation, baggage or missed connections. Have coverage, limits and exclusions confirmed by the insurer in writing. An expensive policy is useless if the charter or activity falls outside its wording.
Custom differs by cruising ground, agreement and professional guidance. The guest decides within the relevant context and service received; distribution commonly goes through the captain so the whole team is recognised. Ask beforehand whether guidance exists, in what currency and on what calculation basis, without presenting it as law.
Wages and ordinary operation of the agreed crew are normally part of the yacht product, subject to contract. That does not create unlimited working hours. Professional rest, safety and role allocation protect guests as well as crew. A plan requiring full service until 03:00 and again from 06:00 every day is not a luxury brief.
Judge the yacht by guests, cabins and use
More length can bring volume, range, stability and toys, but also higher operating costs, fewer harbour options and more formal movement. Compare interior volume, exterior areas, crew count, guest circulation and spaces that will genuinely be used. A superbly run smaller yacht can feel more personal and agile.
Ten guests in five equivalent cabins are a different proposition from twelve with one grand master and tight bunks. Inspect bed, bathroom, sound, stairs and daylight in every cabin. Crew number alone is insufficient: interior service, galley, deck and tender roles must match the intended hospitality.
Among friends or adult families, cabin hierarchy can create social friction. Allocate before signing. Ask about convertible beds, access, engine or anchor-chain noise and storage. An enormous main salon does not compensate for a week in the wrong cabin.
Stabilisers improve comfort but do not remove the sea
At-anchor and underway systems, hull, speed and weather interact. Brand names do not replace an explanation from the captain or technical representative. Guests with pronounced motion sensitivity need an honest appraisal of route, cabin position and alternatives, plus medical guidance — never a promise of a “motionless” yacht.
An older, impeccably maintained classic may operate better than a young yacht with an immature programme. Ask about refit scope, maintenance, current photography, machinery, climate control, connectivity and known restrictions. “Refitted” may mean fabrics, engineering or both; date and work should be named precisely.
Toys, chef and captain define lived quality
Inventories show personal watercraft, Seabobs, e-foils, dive equipment and slides. Relevant questions are number, size, condition, operator, licence, age rule, area and weather. A large slide occupies crew and deck; diving requires professional structure. Select three important activities instead of financing the longest possible list.
The chef translates preferences into several meals every day while supply and route change. The interior team reads closeness, discretion and tempo. Request relevant profiles and references, not private information. The issue is whether the crew suits a family, celebration, culinary ambition and desired level of formality.
Weather, safety, ports, rest, machinery and authorities can alter wishes. A strong captain preserves the meaning of the trip when the place changes. Rank priorities: a quiet night before a famous harbour, swimming before lunch ashore, comfortable passage before another island. Flexibility then becomes specific.
Itinerary and contract must allow operational reality
A beautiful map easily sells an impossible week. Distance, swell, berths, borders and guest rhythm revise the answer each day. Develop a principal plan and two equally credible weather alternatives. Make restaurant and car reservations inflexible only when captain and agent consider the landing realistic.
Embarkation, safety briefing, unpacking and disembarkation reduce time. Seven nights often suit one region; ten to fourteen allow longer transitions and recovery days. More daily distance does not automatically create value. Calculate hours at anchor, swimming, ashore and under way rather than nautical miles alone.
Yacht, dates, ports, rate, payment schedule, APA, tax, cancellation, failure, insurance, guests, cruising area and special conditions must form one consistent document. A recognised form such as MYBA is a framework, not automatic protection. Qualified advice reviews the actual text; brochure and message do not replace a clause.
What happens after guest illness, travel disruption, weather, late arrival or yacht unavailability Substitute vessel, refund and deadlines follow contract and cause. A weather-led route change is not the same as technical failure. Have scenarios explained before payment and aligned with personal insurance.
A good charter broker explains representation, commission, stakeholders, payment, due diligence and conflicts. They assess yacht, commercial status, management, contract and money flow without impersonating legal, tax or insurance professionals. Ask who holds funds, who invoices and who makes decisions when something goes wrong.
Value is more than price per guest
A yacht is chartered as a whole. The mathematical per-person figure falls at full occupancy while comfort may fall too. Cabin quality, tender capacity, meal rhythm and group dynamics matter more than the maximum. Invite only people with whom you wish to share moving space, decisions and several meals every day.
A yacht suits groups that will genuinely use private time, water access and flexible shared days. Guests wanting separate programmes, deep spa infrastructure, several restaurants or guaranteed cities may travel better in a resort or ship. Exclusivity has value only when the party wants the same kind of freedom.
If it is already in the region, has the better crew, suitable cabins and shallower draught, it may reach more bays and consume less of the budget. The released funds can support private aviation, a villa before charter or extra days. Luxury is quality of use, not the largest number in the brochure.
Before signing, demand a complete cost dossier
Request rate, tax treatment, APA, delivery, optional items, gratuity guidance, payment schedule, currency and bank route in one table. Behind it place yacht documents, current images, cabin plan, crew profiles, toys, route A/B/C, insurance and draft agreement. Only when cost, responsibility and alternatives align does an expensive week become a convincing superyacht experience.
